ALT/INDIE STORIES
Neon Trees Paint A
Personal “Picture”
At first
listen, Neon Trees catch you with
the infectious nature of the music, but singer Tyler Glenn says what he’s most proud of on the new album is taking
big strides as a songwriter and using the platform to express himself. The singer told us, “The lyrics are
personal. I’m afraid of some of them. I’m afraid of some of the lines because I
don’t want to offend, but I do mean to be honest at times.” Glenn says he’s particularly proud of the
line in “Teenage Sounds” about not acting out of fear because someone called
him queer. “I’ve been weird, and I don’t
mean [queer] in the way of sexuality, but more in the old way that you’re weird
and kind of different,” says Glenn. “I’ve been called [queer] ever since I was
12 for looking different or liking different things, but I think about the
community that actually do suffer from hatred, whether you’re gay or a
different race, but just being called a name because of something like that is
really really terrible.” The vocalist says he was a little worried
about using slurs in a song, but felt it really drove home the point. He explains, “We have a really strong gay fan
base as well and I felt that was an important line, but at the same time it was
like, ‘Can I say that word in a rock and roll pop song and get away with it
without offending people?’ I guess you
never know, but I’m glad that the band was brave enough to let me do
that.” (see
CLIPS)
Hello Jack, Remember John?
He wasn’t
always Jack White, but now that he’s
a musician that’s who he’ll remain for the rest of his life. The man born John Anthony Gillis says he bid adieu to that identity once he
became an artist. Speaking in Word magazine, the singer says,
“Whatever your name was before, and whoever you were, you don’t get to be that
person ever again. I can only imagine
that’s like going to war and coming back a completely different person.” The vocalist says he feels as though he can
never go home again and has given himself over to dedicating his life to the
art and craft of music. White’s new
album, “Blunderbuss,” was released last week and is on
track to be the top-selling album on the charts.
Vig
Gets In On Grohl’s Sound
Decision
The relationship
between Dave Grohl
and “Wasting Light” producer Butch Vig is now continuing beyond the celebrated album. Vig tells Billboard.com
that when he’s not playing drums and taking care of promotional duties for Garbage, he’s spending spare time with Grohl to put together the Sound City documentary.
According to Vig, “[Dave’s] probably
interviewed 150 or 200 people so far and now we’ve been working on musical
collaborations to be a part of the soundtrack for the film. It’s all new things. Rick
Springfield came in and played with Dave and Josh [Homme] and Queens Of The Stone Age. And we’ve got Corey [Taylor] from Slipknot
and Stone Sour and really
interesting collaborations. I’m not sure
how it’s all going to come together yet, but so far the process has been
really, really fun.” Vig
recently tweeted that he had teamed up with Grohl and
his former Nirvana cohort Krist Novoselic as
well. Grohl
purchased the historic studio’s Neve console and has
been using it to record the music as well as interview the participating acts
about their memories of laying down their classic records there. While there’s no firm date for completion,
fans can keep up on the progress by calling the studio hotline, 1-855-SND-CITY
(763-2489).
Chuvalo’s
Peace
Our Lady Peace may have a great album, but if
nothing else the group can look at the “Curve” record as the one that made a
memorable and powerful connection for the band.
The cover for the disc features Canadian boxing legend George Chuvalo,
an idea which came to the group after they finished the single
“Heavyweight.” In addition, the band met
with Chuvalo and recorded part of a conversation for
usage in the album closer “Metals” on the disc.
Singer Raine Maida says, “He’s had a very tragic
life and fought some hard battles outside of the ring where he’s had two
children and his first wife die of suicide and addiction. But he’s still standing and he’s a very
positive and inspiring man who talks a lot to children regarding addiction and
he’s just a very gracious man who gave us that picture.” Maida says one day after a few meetings, he
brought an iPhone over and recorded a conversation, and from there they were
able to pick out some meaningful messages that not only fit well with the music,
but spoke to what the band felt as a whole in putting the “Curve” record
together. Guitarist Steve Mazur says the band eventually got to showcase the song
“Metals” for Chuvalo at Canadian Music Week and it
was a powerful moment to see their hero taking in the music for the first
time. (see
CLIPS)
The Plotting Pumpkin
We’ve known
for a while that The Smashing Pumpkins
were returning to the album format with “Oceania.” Now there’s a few
more details. The full track listing for
the set includes: “Quasar,” “Panopticon,” “The
Celestials,” “Violet Rays,” “My Love Is Winter,” “One Diamond, One Heart,”
“Pinwheels,” “Oceania,” “Pale Horse,” “The Chimera,” “Glissandra,”
“Inkless,” and “Wildflower.” The
stand-alone disc comes in the midst of Billy
Corgan’s 44-song “Teagarden By
Kaleidyscope” project. “Oceania” is due June 19th.
Gotye Gleeful?
Gotye continues to smooth over any ill will
after he made comments about the recent rendition of “Somebody That I Used To Know” on Glee
sounding “dinky.” He told a Los Angeles
station last week that his comments were misconstrued and his own version has
that dinky and minimal sound as well.
The vocalist tells NME.com that he was initially hesitant to sign
on. He adds, “I wasn’t sure whether
something so mainstream was right for my music and whether it reflected on my
music in a bad way. But I think I
realized that the song’s so popular, it’s kind of out of my hands. So when something like Glee comes along, why would I say no?” As for the version that appeared on the show,
Gotye says he found it “quite clever” to use the song
to address a relationship between at-odds brothers.
From Blur To
Beer
Music may not
be as much at the forefront any more for Blur’s
Alex James, but he continues to keep busy.
Since the band stopped being a major touring and recording act, James
has taken up cheese-making and now has another venture as a brewer. The bassist told The Sun, “I’ve basically become a monk. I make cheese and now I’ve started making
beer. It’s the monk’s life.” James says things are not far enough along to
discuss his special brew or when it will be ready. He also added that a recent trip to a Little
Chef roadside eatery so inspired him that his picked up a cooking contraption
for cooking chips so he can now make his favorite fries at home.
Primal Scream Gets Bloody Bassist
Primal Scream have been
going strong for a couple of decades and the loss of a member won’t slow them
down. The group parted ways with
longtime bassist Gary “Mani” Mountfield earlier this year when it was announced that
he would reunite with The Stone Roses
for one of the most highly anticipated reunions in years. Singer Bobby
Gillespie has now found Mani’s replacement, as My Bloody Valentine’s Debbie Googe will
take over. Her first performance will
come in Scotland in June.
He Is We Minus
She
Alt/pop duo He Is We are about to undergo a
change. The group recently bowed out of
touring, and singer Rachel Taylor
revealed that her ongoing health issues with ankylosing
spondylitis will keep her off the road permanently. Taylor explained, “Music has always been my
dream. I began writing songs to express my feelings – sadness, excitement,
anger, hope, frustration, confusion, love.
I poured everything I had into writing……As many of you know this has
been a very difficult process on my health and happiness. I have dealt with a lot both physically and
mentally. For several tours now, I have
played our set and then was forced to retreat to our green room to cope with
pain, nausea, panic attacks, migraines, and a lot of other really cool stuff
that isn’t fun to talk about like vomiting.”
Taylor says because of her continuing ailment and treatments (she’ll
start chemotherapy in hopes of keeping her vertebrae from fusing together), she
will step aside and Trevor Kelly
will soon continue with another female vocalist to be revealed shortly.
ACTIVE ROCK/METAL
STORIES
Five Finger Death Punch Helping Others
Trespass
Five Finger Death Punch have a solid string of hard rocking
radio hits over the past few years, and that notoriety is one of the reasons
why they wanted to head up the metal-heavy Trespass America tour. Singer Ivan
Moody told us, “I don’t think there’s a wrong time [to bring metal
performers together]. I think this is
something that’s been coming for years.
I just personally, and I know I can speak for my band, but we got tired
of rolling along and going to festivals with three or four good bands and
everybody else is on some other stage and playing in broad daylight and there’s
no production. It’s just
monotonous. There had to be a
change.” Moody says that especially over
the past year where they’ve had more control over their tours, they’ve used
that platform to pay homage and show respect to some of the great metal acts
that haven’t necessarily gotten the mainstream rock airplay. This year’s Trespass America tour is
sponsored by Metal Hammer magazine and features Killswitch Engage, Trivium, Pop Evil, Emmure, God Forbid, and Battlecross playing primarily
indoor venues in order to give each act a chance to showcase their own
production. The tour launches July 13th
in Broomfield, Colorado. (see CLIPS)
A Sympathetic Manson
Marilyn Manson has learned a few things over the
last couple of years, and it’s providing him hope for a rebound in the
industry. The singer told QMI Agency, “When I started this album,
I just felt I wasn’t living up to my potential as a person or as an artist as
much as I wanted to. I didn’t want to be
who I used to be. I wanted to be the
person I was supposed to be, and force myself to make a better record than I
have in the past.” Manson says he
realized the last few records he was writing songs with the desire to make
people feel the way that he felt. But,
he adds, “That’s not really the way I think artists should do things. You make art for people to feel something,
but you don’t want them to feel what you’re feeling, so I had to do things in a
different way.” The vocalist says this
time around, it was important for him to make a more accessible disc, and he
adds that “Born Villain” was a way for him to play music again for the people
closest to him. “I would have my friends
around, but I was isolated while making music.
I was sitting there with headphones on singing while there were people
in the room, which is like reading a book report in front of the whole class,”
says Manson. “You’re pretty naked. I enjoyed that.”
Deuce Is Loose
Music
listeners first warmed to the masked antics of Deuce while he was a member of Hollywood
Undead. But a falling out while
promoting their breakout record led to his dismissal and the unenviable task of
having to start from scratch. Deuce is
now back with his solo record, “Nine Lives,” with the
single “America” starting to climb the charts.
The musician tells Billboard.com, “The album title revolves around my
fans and me coming back to life, like I got nine lives. I might have lost one, but I’m not gonna lose another.
It’s kind of like you can’t kill me twice.” Working as a solo artist is more the
musician’s speed, and he says, “It feels great.
I feel like I underestimated myself and my stuff’s better than I
thought. I think people will be blown
away.” While it is a solo disc, Deuce
did pull in Gym Class Heroes’ Travie McCoy, Falling
In Reverse’s Ronnie Radke,
rapper Truth, and singer/songwriter Jeffree Star for guest appearances. Keep an ear out for more from Deuce.
A Festive Future: Carolina Rebellion
Carolina,
here we come! The hard rock and metal
community will set their sites on Rockingham Speedway in North Carolina Friday
and Saturday for the second annual Carolina Rebellion. The event will begin Friday evening with a
campground party that starts at 7:30PM with Otherwise, followed by One, Lez Zeppelin, and Foxy
Shazam. As
for Saturday, there are three stages.
The Carolina “Monster Energy” stage kicks off at 11:50AM with Paper Tongues, followed by Halestorm, Chevelle, Five
Finger Death Punch, Evanescence, and Shinedown. The Rebellion “Monster Energy” Stage launches
a little earlier, at 11:20AM with Weaving
The Fate.
Other acts on the Rebellion Stage include Adelitas Way, Volbeat, Slash, Staind,
and KoRn. And the day truly kicks off at 11:00AM on the
Jagermeister Stage with Ghosts Of
August, followed by New Medicine, RED, Redlight
King, and P.O.D.
Don’t Go Away, Mad
We just heard
new music from Brad, and now there’s
another Pearl Jam offshoot
resurfacing. Guitarist Mike McCready
revealed to a Kentucky radio station that fans might hear more from Mad Season. While the ‘90s supergroup
would be hard to reunite considering singer Layne Staley’s death, the guitarist explained that the return would
consist of a reissue of the 1995 album “Above” as well as a live record and
potentially some unreleased material that he would like to complete and offer
to fans. When asked why there was never
a second Mad Season disc, McCready revealed that they
had tried, but before getting too far into it, Staley had to return to Alice In Chains
and he died before ever returning. The
guitarist adds, “I had to change the band name to Disinformation. From the
Disinformation sessions, there are probably twelve songs, and out of that,
probably eight that are pretty great.
They need to be edited, but they’re all music, so we’re trying to find
singers that are up to the caliber of Layne to do justice to it.” In addition to Staley, bassist John Baker Saunders passed away in
1999, which led to the dissolution of the band. The remaining members of the band were from
the ‘90s Seattle-area favorites Screaming
Trees.
Gwar
Singer Mocks Hellyeah
Granted, Gwar’s show
definitely does have some shock value, but singer Oderus Urungus used his platform to rip on an
unexpected target during a show last week in Buffalo. Blabbermouth.net reports that the
vocalist told the crowd, “How ‘bout that new Hellyeah
record? Pretty good, huh? What a great name for a band – Hell,
yeah. That is so awesome. How did those fat, stupid dudes from Texas
ever come up with something so awesome?
How did those fat, dumbass, tattooed, ignorant, inbred f***s ever come
up with such an amazing idea as Hellyeah? Wow, Stephen
Hawking, move over!” After hearing
of the diss, Hellyeah
singer Chad Gray tweeted about the
incident, “We’d like to thank Gwar’s lead singer for
talking s*** about us at one of their shows.
Classy guy…yay you! I don’t know
what all the hype is on this Gwar thing. I think it’s an honor to be ripped on by Gwar! They’re
awesome! Thanks Oderus!”
Chiodos
Reunion Leads To DRUGS Shortage
Chiodos reunited late last week with singer Craig Owens, but the vocalist may have
been taken by surprise when the members of his other band, D.R.U.G.S., decided to move on.
Matt Good, Nick Martin, and Aaron Stern issued a joint statement
saying that after much consideration, they were moving on from the band. The musicians say they have no regrets about
the music made or their experience working with Owens, and will look back on
the time with pride. As for Owens, he
wished the three musicians the best of luck moving forward with whatever they
decide to do and he thanked them for standing beside him at one of the most
difficult times in his life. He added
that he’s not sure about the future of D.R.U.G.S. and will now have to figure
out something new if he’s to continue the project on top of his Chiodos duties.
Dio
At The Southern Cross
There’s no
doubt the legacy that Ronnie James Dio left behind after his 2010 death, and it’s speaks
volumes the amount of people that want to honor him almost two years
later. But that’s about to happen as
former guitarist Rowan Robertson and
Norwegian drummer Rick Hagan have
spearheaded a salute to Dio. Along with Black Sabbath’s keyboardist Geoff
Nichols, Paul Di’Anno’s
bassist Are Gogstad
and Astral Doors singer Nils Patrik
Johansson, they formed the group The
Southern Cross, which is a salute to the Dio
music of the ‘80s and early ‘90s. The
group will hit the road this year, playing selections from the Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Dio-eras that featured Ronnie.
Nugent’s “Wilde” About Laura
After wowing
audiences down under, Laura Wilde
received an invite from Ted Nugent
to hit the road in the U.S. The
hard-rocking vocalist says, “It’s truly and honor to be invited to tour the USA
and I feel so privileged to be selected by such an established rocker. I promise to crank it up to 11 and shake the
foundations before Ted brings down the house.”
The singer’s debut disc, “Sold My Soul,” features both her singing and
guitar playing with songs she’s been honing since she began playing
professionally at age 16. Keep an ear
out for the title track and look for Wilde on tour with Nugent in Phoenix (May
4, Celebrity Theatre), Fayetteville (June 10, Arkansas Music Pavilion), Peoria
(June 12, Civic Center), Mankato (June 14, Vetter Stone Amphitheatre), Medina
(June 15, Entertainment Center), and Tama (IA) (June 16, Meskwaki
Bingo Casino Hotel).
PEBBLES bits of rock
All-American Rejects have partnered with Petfinder.com. Guitarist Nick Wheeler recently adopted his dog Dexter using the site and is encouraging fans to do the same. Dexter, a Boston Terrier mix, is currently
out on the road with Wheeler as the band’s unofficial fifth member……River City Extension have booked a
national tour to promote their sophomore set, “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On
Your Anger.” The group just released the
new track, “Welcome To Pittsburgh,” and will be saying
welcome to fans and their support act The
Drowning Men on shows beginning May 29th in Hamden, Connecticut. (see ROCK ON THE
ROAD)
A Life Once Lost are in the
midst of recording their next full-length album for Season Of Mist, but they’ll
break from the studio in June for some touring.
Dates begin June 23rd in Richmond and conclude with the group’s
residency at Kung Fu Necktie in Philadelphia during the month of July. (see ROCK ON THE
ROAD)……The sixth annual Summer Slaughter Tour is now set. Cannibal
Corpse, Between The Buried And Me and The Faceless will head up the summer
run, which kicks off July 20th in Los Angeles.
Other hard metal acts participating in the trek include Periphery, Veil Of
Maya, Job For A Cowboy, Goatwhore, Exhumed, and Cerebral Bore. (see ROCK ON THE
ROAD)
Rock icon Lindsey Buckingham returns to the road later this week. The singer, promoting his “Seeds We Sow” solo
album, has tacked on an East Coast leg to go with his upcoming Western U.S.
run. The tour starts Thursday (May 3) in
Solana Beach, California. (see ROCK ON THE ROAD)
